For NY Quirky Kids Campers….
Camp Akeela offers children from New York City and surrounding areas a unique opportunity to leave the heat and stress of the city and spend their summer in the beautiful scenery of the Green Mountains of Vermont. Campers who don’t normally get a chance to explore nature can spend time in the open space found on Akeela’s 400-acre property. They can hike in the mountains, spend time on our farm, learn about organic vegetable gardening and see birds and animals in the wild. Campers from NYC experience new activities like climbing on the rock wall, zip-lining, swimming in our pristine lake, kayaking and many more.
For most of the campers at Camp Akeela, finding friends is challenging. Our campers are bright (many 2e – twice exceptional) and quite charming. Adults love spending time with them. However, most have trouble connecting with their same-age peers. Spending a summer at Akeela allows these same children to find a community where they fit in, feel a true sense of belonging and a sense of ownership over something bigger than themselves. For the first time, campers feel like they have a group of friends who really get them, people they can stay in touch with all year from around the world.
Campers live in newly renovated cabins with private showers and bathrooms. There are only 8 children in each cabin with four staff members. Those staff members take the time to get to know each individual child’s unique personality and needs. They get the individualized attention they need. With staff support, campers make amazing social gains and learn social skills in the moment. Campers love the food and all of the choices we provide in the dining hall. Akeela caters to many special diets and makes accommodations as necessary.
Camp Akeela provides a unique experience to children who have ASD or Aspergers or who are 2e and quirky.
